Chiropractic Helps Infant with Serious Lung Condition

A case study published in the 19 February, 2008, issue of the scientific periodical, Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research (JVSR), documents a case of an infant with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) being helped with Chiropractic. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia is a serious lung condition that affects infants who are born premature and have resulting breathing and lung problems.

The usual course of medical care for infants with BPD is continual administration of oxygen for the first 28 days in an intensive care unit. The National Insitute of Health estimate that the average length of intensive in-hospital care for babies with BPD is 120 days. In most cases after the child leaves the hospital, the infant will be placed on antibiotics and will need ongoing breathing treatments and intermittent oxygen.

In this case a female infant was born premature at 24 weeks gestation, weighed only 593 grams and was diagnosed with BPD. As a result of the premature birth she had surgery for retinopathy, several rounds of antibiotics and a feeding tube for 3 months. After 17 weeks in the hospital, she was discharged. Her medical care continues and consisted of nightly requirements of 1/8-litre of oxygen, a ventilation machine and continuation of antibiotics.

Three months after her release from hospital she was brought to a Chiropractor for an analysis. At that time she weighed twelve pounds and it was observed that she was listless, constipated, colicky, with pasty skin and sinus congestion. Additionally, it was noted that her breathing was short and rapid, her limbs were rather flaccid and she did not make eye contact. She had also recently completed her last round of antibiotics.

Chiropractic care given was specific adjustments initially twice daily, morning and afternoon for two weeks, then three times per week for two weeks, reducing to twice a week for one week and eventually once every two weeks. The case report noted that after the initial adjustment, her mother reported when her baby was placed on her back, she used her abdomen more to hold her legs up. She was not colicky and was able to pass gas easily for the first time. After the second visit, her sinuses drained and congestion resolved. After the third adjustment, the baby made a loud noise and was drawing in more air.

As care continued, other improvements noted included the ability to hold her head up with more control and improved facial colour and symmetry. Additionally, her bowel movements improved and she became verbally louder and more alert. After her 14th chiropractic adjustment, the baby girl was breathing fully on her own – with no signs of cyanosis. There was no medical intervention during her chiropractic care.

After 24 visits, this baby’s life had been changed as she was then able to roll over on her own, was asymptomatic and has not needed t be readmitted to the hospital nor administered antibiotics.

VACCINATIONS – Informed Consent, Efficacy and Strengthening Immunity

Article by Arlan Cage, ND, Lac        Pathways Magazine, Issue 13

Informed Consent

The Principle of Informed Consent has its roots in millennia-old medical ethics, and in modern times has become codified as law. Federal regulations require that doctors tell patients in advance the nature of medical treatment they are recommending, the risks involved, and whether or not there are alternative methods of treatment. Doctors must also give their patients an opportunity to ask questions. This is often referred to in medical circles as the PARQ Process: Procedures, Alternatives, Risks and Questions.

The official position of the Naturopathic profession, as stated by the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, is precisely this:

All physicians should obtain from parents signed informed consent by providing printed information describing the risks of infectious disease, the risks and benefits of childhood vaccinations and other options. Consent forms describing such information should be provided in a manner which would allow responsible parents to make informed decisions regarding the vaccination of their children(emphasis added).

Unfortunately, the proper level of informed consent is not always given by parents, who are often pressured into vaccinations by health care workers who fail to tell them their legal rights. It is therefore imperative that parents inform themselves. The purpose of my website is to make people aware of issues and information that may not have been available anywhere else, and to provide resources for further investigation.

Efficacy of Vaccinations

Keep in mind the goal of widespread vaccination programs was, at first, very noble – to eliminate infectious diseases and the suffering and death they caused in days gone by. As they have been implemented in modern times, however, most vaccinations fall far short of this goal for several reasons.

First, vaccinations do not impart permanent immunity from the diseases they vaccinate against. Most modern studies show that a high percentage of people who were vaccinated as children have no stored immunity by the time they reach their late teens or early twenties. When exposed to the diseases at this later age, they usually have a much more serious case of these illnesses, which can be fatal more often than when the diseases are acquired naturally as children.

Second, most epidemic-level outbreaks of the various diseases our society is vaccinating against are taking place amongst fully-vaccianted children. Even in the short-term, where vaccinations have been effected at reducing disease incidence, the immune effects are not universal and more and more children are getting sick anyway. In other words, children are being exposed to the risks of vaccination without the benefits of either short-term or long-term immunity. In roughly the last 30 years, for example, every case of polio in the US has been among previously vaccinated individuals.

Third, the risks of side effects from vaccinations now appear to be higher than the risks of serious side effects from the naturally acquired childhood diseases. Additional epidemiological research is needed in this area, but the preliminary findings point in this direction. This will become more apparent when the actual long-term side effects of an altered, hypo-functioning or malfunctioning immune system are included. This will include conditions such as auto-immune diseases and cancer, all of which are now at epidemic levels in the US and elsewhere where vaccinations are widespread.

Fourth, the entire philosophy of vaccinations overlooks the crucial importance of actually catching the various childhood diseases as part of the normal development and training of our immune systems. Without ever being properly trained and allowed to exercise itself, we can never be fully certain that our immune system will be able to do its job throughout our lifetime.

Strengthening Immunity

If you choose not to vaccinate your children, you may be wondering what options you have to protect your child. The best protection is of course a healthy immune system. You may, however, want to do more to prevent illnesses or to reduce the severity of childhood illnesses when they do occur. Basically, the major options for a more natural approach to immunity and prevention can be summarized as follows:

If you child has good nutrition and a strong immune system, allow your child to catch diseases naturally. If you or other children in your family have shown strong vitality and most of your child’s illnesses are short and relatively benign, he or she is probably an excellent candidate for this option. In this case, treat the illnesses when they arise with homeopathy, herbal medicines or other natural means which support the natural immune process.

Treat with homeopathy to prevent illness during known outbreaks of infectious diseases. Even as far back as the time of Hahnemann, homeopathy has been used as a preventative measure during known epidemics and has been shown to reduce both the incidence of diseases and the severity in people who do catch the illness.

Treat with homeopathy according to a schedule to prevent illness. This in essence is similar to the vaccination process, but without the side effects of the vaccinations. It is important to note that homeopathic forms of vaccines will not impart immunity as measured by blood anti-bodies. Nevertheless, in statistics compiled by an Australian Homeopath, Isaac Golden, this process still results in reduction in disease incidence and severity. Golden’s work needs to be replicated and expanded, but the may be a better option if your child is often sick or more strongly afflicted by illnesses.

The Relevance of Chiropractic

“In the past several decades, chiropractic has undergone a remarkable transformation. Labeled an ‘unscientific cult’ by organized medicine as little as 20 years ago chiropractic is now recognized as the principle source of one of the few treatments recommended by national evidence-based guidelines for the treatment of low-back pain, spinal manipulation. In the areas of training, practice and research, chiropractic has emerged from the periphery of the health care system and is now playing an increasingly important role in discussions of health care policy.”

What is Chiropractic Care?

Chiropractic is the worlds largest non-surgical, non-drug prescribing, primary contact health care profession.

It is a natural approach to health, based on the relationship between your spine and your nervous system.

It works like this.

Your spine is designed, among other things to protect your central nervous system and thus allow it to function normally. It is very important that your central nervous system works properly, because it controls and coordinates the function of every single cell, tissue and organ in your body.

So it follows that a healthy spine, coupled with a healthy nervous system, is crucial in terms of maintaining optimal whole body health.

For example, if your spine is twisted or compressed in any way, the bones may choke, stretch or irritate the delicate nerves of the nervous system and will interfere with the correct functioning of the organs or muscles they control. Many common ailments, such as headaches and poor digestion, can stem from a spine which is out of alignment in some way. Other whole body effects can include asthma, ulcers, migraines and vision and concentration problems, to mention just a few.

When the bones of your spine are locked in an abnormal position, and are interfering with the correct functioning of your nervous system, the condition is known as ‘vertebral subluxation’.

The causes of vertebral subluxation are many. Usually, it is brought on by too much stress on the spine to which it cannot adapt. This can result from physical trauma (such as birth trauma, car accidents and falls), psychological stress or through poor general spine care including inadequate nutrition and exercise.

The local effects of vertebral subluxation are many. They can include tight or weak muscle groups, overloading and subsequent degeneration of spine discs and the general aches and pains of the common ‘crook back’ syndrome.

The primary focus of chiropractic care is therefore the location, analysis, correction and prevention of vertebral subluxations.

Chiropractors correct subluxations with gentle spinal adjustments performed by hand or specialised instruments. These specific corrective procedures help to realign the body, thus promoting proper nervous system function and contributing to optimal whole body health.

Good Living Starts With Good Habits

CAA Media Release “Good Living Starts With Good Habits”

Af ter the common cold, a ‘bad back’ is the most common reason given for absence from work in Australia. It’s amazing just how many people develop bad backs in this country.

There are obviously many causes for bad backs, but the people who see more bad backs than anyone, Australia’s Chiropractors, have some very good advice to help you avoid the problem altogether.

Chiroporactors see dozens of patients with bad backs every week. “The pity is that most of the injuries are self-induced,” said Peter Cowie, President of the NSW branch of the Chiropractors’ Association of Australia. “With just a little thought, and the right information, I’m sure that many people would be a lot more comfortable.”

So what is the right information?

“Posture is most important,” said Peter. “From a very early age, children slump in their chairs, slouch when  they walk and sleep in the wrong position. They simply dont know any better because their parents don’t know any better. By the time the kids grow up, they have problems like bad backs.”

One of the answers, according to Chiropractors, is to sit properly in the right chair. It might feel comfortable to slump in a favourite chair, but in fact you can do your body a lot of  harm. “Curvature of the spine is a classic condition causing bad posture. This in turn places stress and strain on many other parts of the body,” said Peter. “If the curvature of the spine is detected early enough and corrected, these stresses can be avoided.”

“We thought the days of heavy schoolbags were over when children started taking back packs to school. But instead of wearing them so the weight is distributed evenly over the body, many children just hang them off one shoulder. That’s a recipe for disaster.”

Sleeping, too, is a cause for worry. “The correct way to sleep, as far as the body is concerned, is on the back or on the side. Many people curl up in bed on their stomachs, which doesn’t do any good at all,” he said. The right bed is also vital, just as much for growing children as for adults.

“Many parents seem to think that the lightweight children can sleep on anything,” he said. “But the truth is that during the growing years a not too soft, not too firm bed is vital to support the body in the right way during sleep.”

“Sleep is when the body recuperates from the stresses of the day. If you’re not comfortable in bed, sleep doesn’t give the body the rest it needs.”

Speaking of rest, Chiropractors also warn about current exercise patterns. They say that rest and recovery is just as vital after exercise as the exercise itself.

“A proper warm up and warm down are important in any exercise program,” said Peter. “We see many patients with sporting or exercise injuries who didn’t bother to warm up properly before exercise. And warming down is necessary as the body changes from the high energy state of exercise back to its normal state.”

“Also listen to your body. There’s no sense in going to extremes. The old adage about no pain, no gain is wrong if the body is trying to say ‘whoa!’ Going too far with exercise can be a disaster – even worse than a lack of exercise.”

” That’s not to say you shouldn’t excercise – far from it. Chiropractors advise people every day on the right exercise program for their size, weight and frame. We suggest that to get fit and remain fit, exercising three or four times per week, for about half an hour time at a time, is a good program,” he said.

“People who push themselves too far in exercise usually end up injured or ill. There are some days when it is better to rest than to exercise. And finally, if you are at all sick, don’t exercise. Your body is having a hard enough time trying to fight the illness. Why make it harder?”

AVN Vaccine Media Release Sept 09

We recently received the following media release from the Australian Vaccination Network. We recognise the importance of research and information such as this and welcome any  of your thoughts, comments or questions.

AUSTRALIAN VACCINATION NETWORK MEDIA RELEASE

A new study, just published in the journal Neurotoxicology, found that primates that received just ONE vaccination containing Thiomersal , the mercury-preservative found in many vaccines including the new AH1N1 (swine flu) shot, had significant neurological impairment when compared with those who received a saline solution injection or no injection at all. Please note that the amount of Thiomersal was adjusted for weight and that these primates recieved only 2mcg – the new Swine Flu vaccine contains 24.5mcg or 49 times the FDA allowable daily limit for an adult.

According to Dr. Andrew Wakefield, Executive Director of Thoughtful House and a co-investigator of the project, “What is particularly concerning is that in spite of the recommendation to remove Thiomersal from vaccines a decade ago, millions of people, many of them children and pregnant mothers, are about to get mercury in their shots. Thiomersal is still routinely used in Hepatitis B and numerous other vaccines world-wide.”

The implications for Australia’s new national campaign which is targeting pregnant women as its first recipients are frightening.

The Australian Vaccination Network, a national vaccine safety and health lobby group, urges the Federal Government and Minister Roxon to err on the side of caution when it comes to administering untested vaccines containing mercury to those who are the most vulnerable. Surely when weighing up the risk of significant brain damage from Thiomersal preservatives against an influenza which has shown to be milder than seasonal flu, we must say that the risk of the vaccine is greater than the risk of the flu. In addition, if this vaccine has not be shown to be safe in children under the age of 10, surely foetuses should likewise be excluded.

Below is the abstract of the study:

Abstract:

This study examined whether the acquisition of neonatal reflexes and sensorimotor skills in newborn rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) is influenced by receipt of the single neonatal dose of Hepatitis B (HB) vaccine containing the preservative Thimerosal (Th). HB vaccine containing a standardized weight-adjusted Th dose was administered to male macaques within 24 hours of birth (n=13). Unexposed animals received saline placebo (n=4) or no injection (n=3). Infants were raised identically and tested daily for acquisition of 9 survival, motor and sensorimotor reflexes by a blinded observer.  In exposed animals there was a significant delay in the acquisition of three survival reflexes: root, snout and suck, compared with unexposed animals. No neonatal responses were significantly delayed in unexposed animals compared with exposed. Gestational age (GA) and birth weight were not signifcantly correlated. Cox regression models were used to evaluate the main effects and interactions of exposure with birth weight and GA as independent predictors and time-invariant covariates. Significant main effects remained for exposure on root and suck when controlling for GA and birth weight such that exposed animals were relatively delayed in time-to-criterion. There was significant effect of GA on visual follow far when controlling for exposure such that increasing GA was associated with shorter time-to-criterion. Interaction models indicated that while there were no main effects of GA or birth weight on root, suck or snout reflexes there were various interactions between exposure, GA, and birth weight such that inclusion of the relevant interaction terms significantly improved model fit. This, in turn, indicated important influences of birth weight and/or lower GA on the effect of exposure which, in general, operated in a way that lower birth weight and/or lower GA exacerbated the detrimental effect of vaccine exposure. This primate model provides a possible means of assessing adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes from neonatal Th-containing HB vaccines exposure, particularly in infants of lower GA or low birht weight. the mechanism of these effects and the requirements for TH is not known and requires further study.
